Vehicle Registration

Texas residents who own a motor vehicle are required by law to renew their vehicle registration annually. You have three (3) registration options:

Option 1 - Online

You may register and pay online by visiting the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website. Follow the links to register your vehicle or to renew your registration.  

Option 2 - By Mail

Smith County: 

To register by mail, send the following to Smith County Tax-Assessor Collector, P.O. Box 2011, Tyler, TX 75710

• renewal notice (keep the vehicle owner’s section for your records)
• a copy of your vehicle insurance card
• registration fee (paid for by check or money order)
• a copy of current inspection report

Cherokee County: 

To register by mail, send the following to the Cherokee County Tax Office, 135 S. Main, Courthouse, Rusk, TX 75785

• renewal notice (keep the vehicle owner’s section for your records)
• a copy of your vehicle insurance card
• registration fee (paid for by check or money order)
• a copy of current inspection report

Option 3 - In Person

Smith County: 

Bring your registration renewal notice, proof of current liability insurance and current inspection report to the Smith County Tax-Assessor Collector located at the Cotton Belt Building, 1517 West Front Street, Tyler, TX 75702 during business hours, Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cherokee County: 

Bring your registration renewal notice, proof of current liability insurance and current inspection report to the Cherokee County Registration & Title, 301 W. Commerce Street, Jacksonville, TX 75766 during business hours, Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If you did not receive your renewal notice, you can renew your registration using your license plate number, VIN (Vehicle Identification number or registration receipt from the previous year.
